Reminders For Recycling Christmas Trees

Christmas tree sale at Bethesda-Chevy Chase Rescue Squad (file photo)It’s again time to get rid of your Christmas tree. Montgomery County wants residents to know they can just push them out on to the curb.

The county’s Department of Environmental Protection and its Division of Solid Waste Services is encouraging singe-family homeowners to recycle their trees by placing them on the curb on their regular recycling collection day.

The trees are composted and chipped for mulch. The county asks that homeowners remove the tree stand and all decorations, ornaments, lights and tinsel.

It’s also possible to recycle live tree branches and needles by yourself. Just place them under trees and shrubbery as winter mulch, or chop the material up and add it to a compost pile.

Apartment and condo residents and business owners should check with their landlords or property managers for specific Christmas tree recycling dates and instructions.
