WASHINGTON – A new phone scam has launched in Maryland — and the caller claims to be with the Office of the Attorney General.

The caller says they need personal financial information, possibly for a supposed debt, said Maryland’s Attorney General Doug Gansler in a news release. Plus, the number that pops up on the caller I.D., 410-528-8662, goes to the Mediation Unit Hotline for the Maryland Attorney General’s office. But it’s a scam called “spoofing.”

Calls placed from the attorney general’s office will display an entirely different number, Gansler says.

“This scam is particularly deceitful and hits too close to home as our office would never call consumers and ask for their bank account information,” Attorney General Gansler said in a news release. “It’s always a good rule of thumb to be vigilant with your personal information so it doesn’t fall into the wrong hands.”

Calls placed from the attorney general’s office will display an entirely different number, Gansler says.

If anyone receives a call requesting information, and feels like something’s amiss, he or she should hang up and report it.
