WASHINGTON — As the region prepares for an ice storm this weekend, the Virginia Department of Forestry is reminding homeowners they should prepare the trees on their properties.

When trees become coated with ice, the added weight can cause both large and small branches to break. The problem lies in where they fall. Branches can damage roofs, cars, power lines and people, says VDOF in a news release.

Homeowners should inspect their trees to look for branches that are rotting or excessively bent and remove them. If they see branches that could compromise power lines, they should contact their utility provider.

If compromised branches are difficult to remove, homeowners should contact a certified arborist to have them removed, says VDOF.
