Two local brewers win gold at Great American Beer Festival

Two D.C.-area breweries came away from last weekend’s Great American Beer Festival in Denver with top honors.

Gold medals went to Alexandria-based Port City Brewing Co. for its Optimal Wit in the Belgian-style Witbier category, and to Ashburn-based Lost Rhino Brewing Co. for its Rhinofest in the German-style Marzen category.

Port City also won a silver and two bronze medals.

Maryland’s lone medal winner was Frederick’s Flying Dog Brewery, winning a bronze medal for its Dogtoberfest in the German-style Marzen category.

The big winner in Virginia was Devils Backbone Brewing Co., near Charlottesville, winning a total of eight medals, including two gold medals.

Devil’s Backbone Brewery was also named Best Small Brewing Company of the Year.
