WASHINGTON — With rain slickers over their pink outfits, which include tutus worn by women and men, the walkers are out in force Friday for the area Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk.

The goal is to walk 20 miles each day through October 13.

Some cheered from the sidelines as the walkers passed Wisconsin and Woodmont avenues in Bethesda, Md.

“I’ve walked seven years in the past,” says one survivor who has been in remission for about six months.

Many of the walkers are doing it in remembrance of loved ones who have lost their lives to breast cancer. One woman says she’s walking her mother, another woman does it for her grandmother and yet another for a mentor.

Seventy-five percent of the net proceeds raised by the Susan G. Komen walk help support Komen’s Research and Training Grant Program, as well as large public health outreach programs for women and men facing breast cancer.
