Studies suggest a quarter of teens log on to their favorite social media site more than 10 times a day, which — like anything — can carry some unintended consequences.

According to a 2011 study from American Academy of Pediatrics, children and adolescents are at some risk of Facebook bullying, clique-forming, privacy issues and exposure to inappropriate content.

The McLean School of Maryland is offering a free class on how to navigate those social media pitfalls. The Potomac school will present “Surviving Social Media,” at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 8 to help parents understand Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, gaming sites and other social media platforms that have become common among kids in this internet generation.

McLean School counselors will lead the class and students will share positive and negative experiences.
