Sports journalist refuses to use Redskins name

WASHINGTON – The Redskins can’t catch a break when it comes to their controversial name. Now, another top sportswriter says she will no longer use the moniker.

“I just don’t want to say that word,” says Christine Brennan, sportswriter for USA TODAY. “This is a personal decision.”

Brennan says she’s a proud Washingtonian. She covered the ‘Skins for The Washington Post from 1985 to 1987, and says she used the name thousands of times. It bothered her even then, she says.

Still, it won’t be easy not to use it.

“How do you explain this name to a child? How do you defend it to a child?” she asks.

Brennan joins Sports Illustrated writer Peter King in refusing to use the moniker.

She told the team and the NFL of her decision as a professional courtesy.
