WASHINGTON (AP) – A developer says his plan to bring a Wal-Mart to the New York Avenue corridor in northeast Washington has fallen apart.

The store was one of three that Wal-Mart said it would not build if a bill requiring large retailers to pay their employees a “living wage” of at least $12.50 an hour becomes law. The bill is on Mayor Vincent Gray’s desk, awaiting a possible veto. Three other Wal-Mart stores are under construction in the city.

Andrew Schaeffer, one of the owners of the land slated for development, tells The Washington Post that the owners have terminated their agreement with developer Rick Walker.

Walker says he’ll try to restructure the deal, which fell apart because another retailer, Lowe’s, decided to build a store elsewhere. — Information from: The Washington Post, http://www.washingtonpost.com
