Man fatally shot by police after standoff in Springfield

WASHINGTON – A police officer shot and killed a man after authorities responded to a reported domestic dispute at a Fairfax County residence Thursday afternoon.

Officers responded to the 7900 block of Pebble Brook Court in Springfield, Va., at about 2:40 p.m. The person who made the complaint said a man involved had a gun.

When Fairfax County police arrived, officers reportedly tried to negotiate with the man — later identified as 46-year-old John Geer — to have him come out of the home, according to a preliminary investigation. During the negotiations, officials say a patrol officer fired a single shot that struck Geer. A police news release does not say what prompted the officer to shoot. A wounded Geer then barricaded himself inside the residence, according to officials. Authorities mobilized a hostage rescue vehicle, went inside the residence and found Geer dead. The name of the officer who fired the shots was not released. The officer has been placed on administrative leave, which is protocol after such shootings. Fairfax County police are continuing to investigate the incident.
