WASHINGTON — The new year means more cash for workers around the country as the minimum wage is set to rise in several cities and states.

For 14 states, 2016 begins with a higher minimum wage, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

In other places, including Maryland and D.C., the minimum wage will go up later in the year.

Maryland’s minimum is currently set at $8.25, but that will increase 50 cents to $8.75 in July.

The rise in the District also will occur in July.  D.C.’s minimum wage is $10.50 right now; it will be bumped up to $11.50.

There is no increase scheduled in Virginia, where the minimum wage is $7.25, the federal minimum.
