WASHINGTON — There’s a little more gold in Bethesda after local phenom Katie Ledecky returned home earlier this month from the World Swimming Championships in Spain. She visited the WTOP newsroom earlier this week with her medals.

After enjoying summer vacation, Ledecky says she’s just “excited to get back to school in a few weeks” and to fall back into a training routine.

It’s easy to forget Katie Ledecky is going to be a junior in high school at Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart.

She just returned from Barcelona where she won four gold medals and set a world record in the 800 meter freestyle which she says was “pretty much a perfect meet.”

Ledecky’s mom, Mary Gen, thinks the Olympian visited one or two tourist sites, but most of what she saw was underwater. “The team had a training camp in Victoria, Spain and then we flew to Barcelona a few days before the meet started and trained there for a few days,” Ledecky says.

After winning gold at the 2012 London Summer Olympics, it has been a wild year for Ledecky, who is as humble as she is talented.

“This community has been really great at supporting me and it’s great to celebrate with them and to share my experiences with them,” she says.
