Nonprofit distributes 5,000 backpacks to military kids

WASHINGTON – Operation Homefront, a nonprofit agency that offers support to military families, will distribute nearly 5,000 backpacks full of school supplies to military kids in the D.C. area.

The first of the five-day event, dubbed “Back-To-School Brigade,” will take place Monday, Aug. 12 at the American Legion Post 364 in Woodbridge, Va., for families at both the U.S. Marine Corps Base in Quantico, Va., and the U.S. Army installation at Ft. Belvoir.

The last giveaway will be held Friday, Aug. 16 at the U.S. Army Aberdeen Proving Ground in Aberdeen, Md.

Parents interested in participating can register for the events online.

Operation Homefront says all of the school supplies were donated by people throughout D.C., Maryland and Northern Virginia. The items were collected at local Dollar Tree stores.
