WASHINGTON – The rates for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act have been set in Maryland — and they’ll be lower than expected.

Like many of the other states that have announced rate plans, Maryland’s insurance will cost a third lower than expected when people get a chance to sign-up between October and March. Changes to personal insurance individuals get through work aren’t affected.

For example, a healthy 21-year-old nonsmoker could pay as little as $93.

The rates, however, are still up from last year due to inflation and new coverage requirements.

Here are estimated insurance rates for Montgomery and Prince George’s counties from the Maryland Insurance Administration:

There are many variations of plans based on the company chosen and the region the insured lives. The Maryland Insurance Administration has listed the rates for various plans for 2014.

The rates were announced Friday, July 26 and sale of plans will begin Oct. 1, with coverage beginning Jan. 1, 2014.
