WASHINGTON – Sharks and Speedos.

Both can be frightening, but it appears they are not what beachgoers fear most, according to Expedia.com. The travel site is out with its 2013 Flip Flop Report, a survey of beach lovers all over the world.

Turns out, the survey found, that theft is the biggest concern for most. For example, here in the U.S., 54 percent of those surveyed said they worry most about having their belongings stolen. That compares with 16 percent who say their biggest fear is drowning or rip currents.

When it comes to sun bathing “au naturel,” Germany takes the top topless honors with 17 percent saying they’ve caught some rays naked on a public beach. By comparison, only about 5 percent of Americans report doing the same.

Other findings: Beachgoers in India and Mexico make the most sandcastles. And speaking of Speedos, 65 percent of beachgoers worldwide say the skimpy bathing suits are acceptable.

Harris Interactive conducted the survey of 8,606 adults in Europe, North America, South America and Asia Pacific from April 19, 2013 to May 15, 2013. Those who participated had either taken a vacation in the last year or were likely to do so.
