WASHINGTON – A taxi driver charged with shooting an Alexandria police officer during a traffic stop has been found incompetent to stand trial.
An Alexandria Circuit Court judge issued the ruling Thursday in the case of Kashif Bashir, who will undergo mental health treatment.
Bashir, 27, is accused of shooting Alexandria police officer Peter Laboy in the head while Laboy was pulling over Bashir’s taxi in February.
Laboy was shot after approaching Bashir on his police motorcycle.
Bashir’s attorneys have said he suffers from hallucinations. He’s being sent to a state hospital.
Laboy has been undergoing extensive rehabilitation.
Several fundraisers have been held on Laboy’s behalf in recent months and the community has rallied around his family.
A review of the case has been set for Jan. 9, 2014.
