Metro station manager charged with embezzlement

WASHINGTON – A Metrorail station manager in Virginia has been charged with embezzlement by the Metro Transit Police.

Prince Egyir, 43, was arrested by Metro police detectives on Thursday after an undercover investigation. Metro says in a statement that when riders with paper fare cards were unable to exit Egyir’s station due to insufficient fare or other problems, Egyir would take the cards and let the riders through without running the cards through a reader.

This would leave value on the cards, Metro says. Egyir would then transfer that value onto SmarTrip cards, which he would then resell, they said. They added that Egyir had 10 paper fare cards on him when he was arrested.

Egyir appeared in Alexandria General District Court on Friday. He has been suspended and faces internal charges that could lead to termination.
