‘Explosion’ in D.C. attributed to fireworks in backpack

WASHINGTON – Reports of an “explosion” in northeast D.C. Sunday night turned out to be a backpack full of fireworks.

The Metropolitan Police Department tells WTOP an initial call described an explosion near 3rd and L Street NE. When police arrived they discovered someone had set off a backpack full of M-80 fireworks – which are illegal in the District.
