Montgomery County Police recently nabbed quite a few drivers failing to yield at a crosswalk on a busy stretch of Wisconsin Avenue.

The crosswalk on Wisconsin Avenue at Stanford Street, at the U.S. Post Office and Trader Joe’s grocery (6831 Wisconsin Ave.), has long been known as a problem spot for pedestrians.

Drivers must yield to pedestrians crossing the six-lane road, but there is no traffic light. Residents say it’s common for drivers to speed through, oblivious to the crosswalk.

Montgomery County’s Ken Hartman, director of the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Regional Services Center, said police recently issued 22 citations to drivers failing to yield at the crosswalk, part of the Department’s new driver-focused pedestrian safety enforcement effort.

The Action Committee for Transit last year featured the crosswalk in a program titled “Montgomery County Doesn’t Want You to Cross the Street.” In April, a driver apparently mowed down one of the signs signaling the crosswalk.
