Picking up the pieces after storm rips through region

ROCKVILLE, Md. — In a community full of downed wires and uprooted trees, one home stands out in its misfortune.

As many as seven trees pummeled a home on Bauer Drive just north of Norbeck Road.

“Some of these trees are probably at least 150, 200 years old,” says Ernest Shifflett, owner of Shifflett Tree Service.

He’s been in the business 46 years.

“It’s a mess. This is about the worst I’ve seen [in the area],” he says.

To add to the misery, the home’s new owners had been planning to move in this weekend, according to the crews working at the house.

In a few Rockville neighborhoods, Thursday’s storm left as much of a mark as the derecho last year.

“Derecho was a lot wider, but it’s worse in this area right here,” Shifflett says.
