WASHINGTON – The Nationals’ Bryce Harper is among three finalists for the National League Most Valuable Player award.

Major League Baseball announced on Tuesday that Harper joins the Arizona Diamondbacks’ Paul Goldschmidt and the Cincinnati Reds’ Joey Votto as the finalists for the award, determined by the votes of the members of the Baseball Writers Association of America.

MLB.com’s John Schlegel calls Harper’s 2015 season “stupendous,” citing his 1.109 OPS, his major league-leading on-base and slugging percentages and his second-best totals in runs and walks. He adds that Harper “figures as the favorite.” Harper also hit 42 home runs, good for a tie for the National League lead and third in the majors.

Schlegel points out, however, that for the first time since 1959, none of the three finalists’ teams made the postseason.

The winner will be named Nov. 19.
