Suspicious car closes R Street, man in custody

WASHINGTON – D.C. police were investigating a suspicious car that contained a gas canister in the Dupont Circle area Monday afternoon.

The investigation shut down an area around 17th and R streets NW.

NBC 4 reports that police were called to the intersection after a man in a Honda Civic was seen driving erratically and yelling at people.

ABC 7 reports police found a gas container and an ammo container in the car, and books were found inside the ammo container.

The man was taken into custody. It is unclear what, if any, charges the man could face. NBC 4 says the man was undergoing a mental evaluation.

ABC 7’s Tom Roussey tells WTOP that the beat-up, older car was parked across the street from an elementary school. No one was hurt in the incident.

The intersection re-opened to traffic about 7 p.m.
