WASHINGTON – The speed camera that sits along K Street NW as drivers move into the tunnel under Washington Circle is on pace to set a new record, and drivers don’t show any signs of adhering to the 25 mph speed limit it enforces.

The camera, one of many in D.C., is responsible for millions of dollars in revenue. According to The Washington Post, the K Street speed camera has generated 61,061 tickets in the past seven months.

It catches about 300 drivers a day, which equates to $8.1 million in revenue for the District. The Post says no other city speed camera comes close to that dollar amount.

Drivers either don’t care, or they are ignoring the “Photo Enforced” warnings that hang under speed limit signs nearby.

Since the start of the current fiscal year last October, D.C.’s 10 most profitable cameras have issued $29.5 million in citations, according to the Post.
