Two counties, two very different inaugurations

WASHINGTON — One county is trying to prove it can be epicurean. Another hopes to demonstrate its fiscal responsibility.

But this isn’t just a new policy platform. Newly-elected politicians will be pushing these approaches through their inauguration galas in the next few days.

Prince George’s County Executive-elect Rushern Baker hopes to move past the recent corruption allegations that put his county on the national map through a glitzy inaugural ball at to be held at the Gaylord National Harbor Monday.

It will demonstrate the county is capable of hosting sophisticated functions in keeping with the businesses they hope to attract, while also attempting to shake off the alleged pay-to-play culture for a new government.

Regular tickets start at $100 and get exponentially more expensive through various bejeweled “paths,” ending with “Diamond” for $25,000.

Funds will pay for the event and benefit local charities.

Meanwhile in Montgomery County, which is bracing itself for another year of deep budgeting cuts, Executive Isiah Leggett plans to hold his swearing-in ceremony at Rockville High School. There will then be a reception for employees at the county’s Executive Office Building.

The executive ball will be held Sunday at the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County. Tickets range from $100 to $125.
