Some surprises in the 10 most pirated movies of 2011

WASHINGTON — The major motion picture list is in for 2011, although not for the biggest box office hits but for the top 10 most pirated movies.

“Fast Five” tops the list of the movies that were illegally downloaded the most in 2011. The movie, the fifth and most successful installment of the “Fast and Furious” action series, was downloaded 9.3 million times worldwide, according to TorrentFreak.com, which released the list.

It’s interesting to note, points out the Los Angeles Times, that while “Fast Five” topped this year’s list, it paled in comparison with last year’s most pirated film, “Avatar,” which was illegally downloaded 16.6 million times worldwide in 2010 — 78 percent more than “Fast Five.”

“The Hangover Part II” came in second at 8.8 million downloads, with “Thor” following in third place at 8.8 million downloads.

The top box office success of the year, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2,” barely made the top ten pirated list, coming in at tenth place after being illegally sought just over 6 million times.

Further, the second and third biggest box office hits of the year, “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” and “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1,” didn’t make the top 10 list of the year’s most-pirated movies, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Another interesting tidbit, the Times notes, several of the most-pirated movies were not box office hits, such as “Source Code,” “Sucker Punch” and “127 Hours” — which came out in 2010, but gained popularity in 2011 after its many Oscar nods.

Here’s the full list of 2011’s most pirated films:

  • “Fast Five” — 9.3 million downloads
  • “The Hangover Part II” — 8.8 million downloads
  • “Thor” — 8.3 million
  • “Source Code” — 7.9 million
  • “I Am Number Four” — 7.7 million
  • “Sucker Punch” — 7.2 million
  • “127 Hours” — 6.9 million
  • “Rango” — 6.5 million
  • “The King’s Speech” — 6.3 million
  • “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2” — 6 million
