WASHINGTON — A Silver Spring man is being charged with attempted murder after police say he shot two people earlier this month.

On Sept. 10 at about 9:30 p.m., Montgomery County police responded to the 900 block of University Boulevard East for the report of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found two men — a 25-year-old and a 40-year-old — both with gunshot wounds. Both of their wounds were non-life-threatening.

Investigators say 22-year-old Donta Labell Pope, the two victims and several other acquaintances were socializing in the rear yard of a home on University Boulevard East when an argument began. When Pope, a Silver Spring resident, was asked to leave, he removed a handgun from his waistband and fired several shots, hitting the two men.

Pope then fled the scene.

Detectives identified Pope as the suspect in the shooting and arrested him in D.C. on Sept. 14. He is in custody in D.C. and is awaiting extradition to Montgomery County.

Pope is being charged with two counts of attempted second-degree murder, two counts of first-degree assault, and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
