Montgomery County leaders want bikesharing

Michelle Basch, wtop.com

WASHINGTON – Bikesharing will come to Montgomery County of our area if county leaders get their way.

The plan is to make 204 bikes available at 29 docking stations in southern Montgomery County.

The county’s department of transportation has applied for a $1 million grant from the Maryland Department of Transportation to cover most of the initial cost.

The grant awards are expected to be announced early next year.

Docking stations would be located in places like Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Silver Spring and Takoma Park, and would be integrated into the Capital Bikeshare program.

A public meeting was held last month to gather ideas about where the docking stations should go.

There are already plans to launch bikesharing in parts of the City of Rockville and the Shady Grove area, but leaders would like to bring it to the entire county.
