RICHMOND, Va — The cost of owning and driving a car could go up if Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell has his way.

Included in his $85 million budget proposal is $10 million in Department of Motor Vehicle fees.

“Pretty much all of the revenues at DMV are solely fee revenue. We don’t put really any general funds in there,” says McDonnell. “The obligation is to make sure the fees match the expense.”

The increases are for special items: $10 to replace a lost car title, $10 to renew registration and $20 to replace a lost license.

The general assembly must approve the fees during a budget review next month.

The governor’s two-year budget proposal is the highest in Virginia history. Tax increases are not included.
