MOUNT VERNON, Va. – It’s George Washington’s 281st birthday this weekend and the president’s Virginia home at Mount Vernon is celebrating with historic breakfast treats and free admission on Monday.
“We hope that everyone takes advantage of the free admission on the Monday holiday and will come see us,” says Melissa Wood, a spokeswoman for Mount Vernon.
“We’re open at 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. But Monday we open a little early at 8 a.m.,” she says.
Monday is also the last day visitors can see a piece of history for a while. The “Acts of Congress,” a 108-page book that includes George Washington’s personal copy of the U.S. Constitution is on display this weekend.
Museum visitors can also eat like President Washington who was more likely to have enjoyed hoecakes instead birthday cake. Hoecakes are a type of pancake made of cornmeal mush and were one of Washington’s favorite breakfast foods, according to Mount Vernon staff.
“I think that’s what George Washington would prefer,” says Wood.
General admission to Mount Vernon is typically $17 a ticket for visitors ages 12 to 61, $8 for children ages six to 11, $16 for seniors ages 62 and older. Children under five are admitted for free.
