WASHINGTON – The speed limit on the Intercounty Connector could be raised to 70 mph, if a recently introduced bill in Annapolis becomes law.

The Maryland Transportation Authority has been studying whether it would be safe to raise the speed limit from the current 55 mph to 60 mph.

That study may be moot, since Delegates Aruna Miller, D-Darnestown, and Neil Parrott, R-Hagerstown, are co-sponsoring a bill that would raise the top speed on interstates and expressways statewide from 65 mph to 70 mph.

Miller says she believes the bill will pass.

As reported by The Gazette, Miller says the complaints from constituents hit three main points.

“One, the posted speed limit is way too low. Two, the toll is way too high. And three, the enforcement is excessive,” Miller says, according to The Gazette.

A separate emergency bill by Sen. Jennie Forehand, D-Rockville, would raise the ICC’s speed limit to 60 mph.

Both bills are scheduled to be debated in Annapolis in February.
