Mont. Co. energy tax increase could become permanent

WASHINGTON — Montgomery County residents have been paying more than double the previous energy taxes for more than a year.

Right now, that hike is set to expire in June, but six unions representing county employees want the county council to extend the energy tax increase and make it permanent.

It costs somewhere around $20 more a month.

The police, fire, teachers, principals and government employee unions wrote to new council president Roger Berliner that the county can’t afford to lose the money.

Berliner tells the Washington Examiner if the rate isn’t renewed, it might mean big cuts to services, and longer salary freezes.
