WMATA brings $1 billion development project to New Carrollton Metro

WASHINGTON – Big plans are in the works for the New Carrollton Metro station over the next few years.

The newest plan approved by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority calls for a 39-acre development around the station.

With the $1 billion project, WMATA hopes to bring residential, office, retail and hotel business to a 2 million to 4 million square foot space. If all goes according to plan, the project may eventually expand to 10 million square feet.

Bike paths and pedestrian walkways are also in the plans for the land surrounding the Metro station.

Two companies were chosen to oversee the development, which the Gazette reports is expected to bring 3,800 permanent jobs and 5,000 construction jobs in the next 15 years.

Officials say the plan should bring in $2 million each year to Prince George’s County.
