Fairfax County considers building new schools

WASHINGTON – Student enrollment is up in Fairfax County, prompting school officials to consider building new schools to alleviate overcrowding.

By September 2012, 3,000 more students were enrolled in the county’s public schools compared to September 2011.

The Capital Improvement Program proposes adding three elementary schools and one high school. One elementary school would be added in the eastern and western parts of the county, and one along Route 1.

The high school would be added to relieve over crowding at Centreville, Chantilly and South Lakes high schools.

The program will cost more than $870 million over five years, pending approval from the school board and the planning commission.

The School Board will hold a public hearing on the fiscal year 2014 to 2018 Capital Improvement Program at 6 p.m., Monday, Jan.7, 2013, at Jackson Middle School in Falls Church, Va. The board will vote on the plan on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013.
