1 dead following single-vehicle collision in Montgomery County

WASHINGTON — Montgomery County police are investigating a single-vehicle fatal collision that occurred Sunday morning in Damascus, Maryland.

Police say the vehicle strayed and hit a telephone pole. The driver, identified as Jeffery Mark Thornton, 19, was alone.

Around 5 a.m., an off-duty Montgomery County police officer came to the scene of the collision in the 8100 block of Damascus Road.

Thornton “succumbed to his injuries,” police say in a press release.

The collision is still under investigation and police ask anyone who witnessed it to call the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240-773-6620.
