Should kids start high school later?

WASHINGTON – Parents in Montgomery County Tuesday will present the Montgomery County Board of Education a petition to start high school later.

The petition calls for shifting school start times forward from 7:25 a.m. to 8:15 a.m.

Parents are concerned about sleep deprivation.

The petition has more than 10,000 signatures.

The petition states: “We respectfully request our school board to officially recognize the large and compelling body of research regarding teen sleep and academic achievement, and, with a resolution, to set a goal to start high schools in Montgomery County, MD, after 8:15 AM.”

Do you think kids should start school later? Is an early wakeup hurting their ability to learn? Or is it just part of school? Post a comment in this story, comment on WTOP’s Facebook Page or use #WTOP on Twitter.
