Black bear sighted in Damascus area

WASHINGTON — Damascus area residents have reported multiple sightings of a black bear at locations in and around Oak Ridge Park in Montgomery County.

That’s not uncommon this time of year, according to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. In early summer, young bears begin to find their territory.

Police officers are telling residents not to approach or feed bears that they encounter.  You should never corner a bear; allow it a route of escape.

For more information or to report a bear sighting, call the state’s Wildlife & Heritage Service at 410-260-8540. Call 410-260-8888 to leave a message after hours. Residents may call 911 if there’s an immediate threat due to the bear’s behavior.
