Boy, driver identified in fatal Gaithersburg crash

WASHINGTON — A boy is dead and his mother is in the hospital after a car crash early Tuesday in Gaithersburg, Maryland. It happened around 3:30 a.m. on Sam Eig Highway near Fields Road. Montgomery County police say the driver, Narges Shafeirad, was headed westbound in her 2003 Toyota Corolla when she crossed into the eastbound lanes and crashed. The car then caught on fire. Shafeirad told first-responding personnel about her son, Daniel Dana, in the rear seat. “Rescuers attempted to force open the vehicle, breaking glass, and then extinguishing the fire, but were unable to remove the victim from the vehicle,” police said in a news release. Dana died at the scene. Shafeirad remains hospitalized in serious condition. Those with information about this crash should call the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240-773-6620. Sam Eig Highway was closed between Diamondback and Fields roads for about six hours as police investigated.
