Ocean City pier damaged by storm

OCEAN CITY, Md. – Hurricane Sandy has done significant damage to the downtown pier in Ocean City.

Town officials confirmed the damage, which occurred early Monday as heavy surf pounded at the pilings.

Gov. Martin O’Malley says the fishing pier is now "half-gone."

The pier extends from the southern end of the Boardwalk in an area that’s been under a mandatory evacuation order.

The pier has a bait and tackle shop on it. After that point, about 100 to 150 feet of the pier is gone.

Tracy Lind, a front desk worker at a Holiday Inn & Suites in Ocean City, said the pier was an icon and about as close to the ocean as one could get without going in to the water. She said was at the pier Sunday, taking photos.
