Steelers throw-back uniforms create ironic buzz

WASHINGTON – Redskins and Steelers fans will notice a big difference on the field when the teams meet in Pittsburgh Sunday. The Steelers are debuting the team’s 80th anniversary throw-back uniforms. And they’re not getting any points for fashion.

Unlike the simplicity of throw-back uniforms from other teams including the Patriots and the Browns, the Steelers’ black and gold striped uniforms make a louder statement. They are modeled after the 1930s then-Pirates uniform.

When he was first shown the weekend opponents’ new threads, Redskins outside linebacker Ryan Kerrigan was a bit thrown-off.

“Those are something else,” Kerrigan said. “I like ours just a little bit better than those.”

When asked to describe them, he made the obvious bee analogy. “They look like prison uniforms with a little bumble bee action,” Kerrigan said.

The Steelers will wear the uniforms at a handful of home games during the team’s 80th anniversary season.
