WASHINGTON – A 6-year-old boy is dead and two women are fighting for their lives Sunday morning following a house fire in Lewisdale.
Prince George’s County Fire’s spokesman Mark Brady says the one-story brick home in the 2400 block of Griffen Street was engulfed in heavy fire when firefighters arrived around 4 a.m.
Four family members were at home at the time of the fire: a child, his mother, grandmother and aunt.
Firefighters from Chillum-Adelphi Fire searched the house for the trapped occupants. Three were located and removed from the house.
The fourth occupant, in her 60s, was able to escape before firefighters arrived.
All three removed from the house did not have a pulse and were not breathing.
Paramedics treated all three and transported them to a nearby hospital.
The young boy died from his injuries at the hospital.
The two adult females, in their 30s and 60s, were partially resuscitated and have been transferred to a hospital for hyperbaric treatment.
The treatment is used in cases of smoke inhalation and will provide the best chance for survival.
One firefighter suffered a minor burn. He is expected to be treated and released later Sunday.
Investigators estimate the property damage at $100,000
One of the things investigators are looking into is if the home had a working smoking detector.
Firefighters plan to return to the neighborhood Sunday afternoon to check smoke alarms and discuss escape routes with neighbors.
Prince George’s County citizens and residents can contact the fire department’s Safety First Smoke Alarm line at 301-864-SAFE (7233) and have a working smoke alarm installed in their home, at no charge.
