WASHINGTON – With unemployment rates remaining high, many college students are understandably nervous about their job prospects after graduation. A recent study highlights some of the majors students shouldn’t pick if they hope to find a job.
OnlineCollege.org says some majors perform better than others, and recently put together a list of majors whose graduates have close to 20 percent unemployment rates.
Topping the list are those with undergraduate degrees in clinical psychology, who have the highest unemployment rate of any major at 19.5 percent, says OnlineCollege.
More specialized psychology degrees, such as educational psych and industrial and organizational psych fare considerably better.
The remaining top worst majors for job prospects are:
- 2. Fine Arts: 16.2 percent unemployment rate
3. U.S. History: 15.1 percent unemployment rate
4. Library Science: 15 percent
5. Architecture: 13.9 percent
6. Information Systems: 11.7 percent
7. Military Technologies: 10.9 percent
8. Philosophy and Religious Studies: 10.8 percent
9. Linguistics and Comparative Literature: 10.2 percent
10. Humanities: 9.4 percent
One note to remember: The unemployment rate for any of these majors is still far better than for those without college degrees, which is 22.9 percent.
