WASHINGTON – Wednesday night brought a double dose of heartbreak for D.C. sports fans, with the elimination of the Washington Capitals from the NHL playoffs and the Wizards losing to the Atlanta Hawks in the final seconds of Game 5.
At Madison Square Garden in New York, the Capitals fell 2-1 in Game 7 with Derek Stepan’s overtime goal.
Just about 20 minutes earlier, the Wizards came up short against the Hawks 82-81, but it was a close one. With less than two seconds remaining, the Hawks’ Al Horford snagged a rebound and scored to give his team a win.
John Wall was back on the court Wednesday night for the Wizards after fracturing several bones in his left hand.
The Hawks now have a 3-2 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals, and the Wizards host Game 6 at home on Friday.
The double losses followed wins from the D.C. United, who topped Orlando City 2-1, and the Nationals beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-6.
