Watching reruns offers mental benefits

WASHINGTON – When people sit down to rewatch their favorite TV shows, they’re getting more than a few familiar laughs.

According to the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science, people turn to beloved reruns especially after strenuous mental activity or to help keep their emotions intact.

Researchers say familiar fictional worlds like TV reruns can recharge the watcher’s batteries after physical and mental exertion.

A half hour with “Seinfeld,” “Desperate Housewives,” “I Love Lucy” or other favorites can help decompress and provide good feeling.
