Deployed dads in delivery rooms via Skype

WASHINGTON — Even in deployment, dads are not excluded from the delivery room, thanks to Skype and an understanding military.

In Afghanistan, men can be linked to military hospitals by CheetaNet, which provides high-speed Internet access, Fast Company reports.

In a Defense Department video, Airman Cody Smith, said the 838th Air Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron really came through when his baby was born.

“They really helped me out, helped everybody else out, made my deployment that much more enjoyable, and it really kind of solidified why I joined the Air Force.”

Southern Maryland Hospital at nearby Andrews Air Force Base conducted its first Skype-linked labor and delivery in October, 2010
