WASHINGTON – After vice presidential nominee Rep. Paul Ryan said in a radio interview last week that he had finished a marathon in under three hours, a magazine is looking into his claim.

Runner’s World has received confirmation from a Ryan spokesperson that the Republican vice presidential nominee ran one marathon in 1990. He finished in 4 hours, 1 minute, and 25 seconds.

Ryan made the comments about his running history on the Hugh Hewitt radio show, which lists a transcript of the interview.

In the interview, Hewitt says, “I’ve just gotta ask, what’s your personal best?” Ryan responds, “Under three, high twos. I had a two hour and fifty-something.”

Scott Douglas of Runner’s World writes, “If Ryan has broken 3:00, he’d be the fastest marathoner to be on a national ticket. John Edwards has run 3:30; George W. Bush has run 3:44; Sarah Palin has run 3:59; and Al Gore has run 4:58.”

The magazine reports its request for more information from Ryan’s office has received no response.
