WASHINGTON — It may have been a disappointing postseason for the Maryland Terps men’s basketball team, but the offseason is going pretty well: Point guard Melo Trimble is returning for his sophomore season.

The Washington Post reports that Trimble told coach Mark Turgeon that he wanted to come back to College Park about 48 hours after the Terps’ season ended with a loss to West Virginia in the NCAA Tournament, but that Turgeon told him to wait before announcing his choice.

Turgeon spoke with contacts in the NBA to make sure Trimble wasn’t making a mistake by staying in school, the Post says, and then asked him to sleep on it.

Finally, Trimble announced Wednesday that he was coming back. His statement read in part, “I am excited about spending another year with my teammates and building on what we accomplished this year. I want to thank Coach Turgeon for helping my mom and I through this process. … Being a member of the Maryland basketball program has been an unbelievable experience and I can’t wait to be back in front of the best fans in college basketball next season.”

Junior Jake Layman is also making a decision on whether to return.
