NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are mixed in afternoon trading on Wall Street. Energy stocks are higher after two days of big declines, as oil prices rise for the first time in five days. Devon Energy was the biggest gainer in the S&P 500 index after it reported record oil production and said that its third-quarter earnings more than doubled to $1.02 billion.
DETROIT (AP) — Chrysler Group says its third-quarter net profit rose 32 percent as worldwide sales continued to climb. Chrysler made $611 million in the July-through-September quarter, compared with $464 million a year ago. Revenue rose nearly 18 percent to $20.7 billion.
PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The commercial fishing season for northern shrimp in the Gulf of Maine has been canceled for a second straight year. The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s Northern Shrimp Section voted today to cancel next year’s season on the recommendation of a technical committee that says rising ocean temperatures have depleted the shrimp population.
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Philip Morris International is partnering with two U.S. tobacco leaf suppliers to buy its tobacco rather than working directly with farmers. The seller of Marlboro and other cigarette brands overseas says the move will help the company “achieve important supply chain efficiencies while remaining a major purchaser of U.S.-grown tobacco.” The agreements with Virginia-based Universal Corp. and North Carolina-based Alliance One International Inc. take effect in April.
MOSCOW (AP) — Russia’s ruble has hit an all-time low after the country’s central bank said it would dial back its support for the currency in international markets. Today’s announcement is a step toward freely floating the currency. Supporting it has become more difficult as confidence in the Russian economy wanes. The ruble has lost more than 25 percent this year amid concern over economic sanctions and a fall in the price of oil and gas exports.
