Prosecutors: Man defrauded immigrants in DC, Md.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A Montgomery County man recently convicted of committing fraud against immigrants by posing as an attorney has been ordered to no longer describe himself as offering immigration services.

The D.C. Attorney General’s Office announced Tuesday that 61-year-old Ramon Escarfullet of Silver Spring has agreed to the order following an investigation by a committee of the D.C. Court of Appeals.

The attorney general’s office says Escarfullet distributed flyers claiming to help immigrants who’ve lived in the U.S. for 10 years to become permanent residents. Instead, prosecutors say Escarfullet’s actions exposed a number of immigrants to deportation proceedings.

Escarfullet worked out of offices in Northwest Washington and Silver Spring, Maryland.

He pleaded guilty last month to committing fraud against immigrants and is serving six months in jail.
