BALTIMORE (AP) — Republican Larry Hogan campaigned relentlessly against tax increases and stuck to a pro-business message to win a big upset against Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown in the race for governor in heavily Democratic Maryland.
Hogan successfully tagged Brown as four more years of Democratic Gov. Martin O’Malley amid a nationwide anti-incumbent mood.
Hogan prevailed with 54 percent of the vote Tuesday, compared to 44 percent for Brown. That’s with 97 percent of precincts reporting.
Hogan says he thought he was going to win, but he was “a little surprised by the margins.” He says his campaign set the highest possible goals and surpassed them.
