CONI premier meets Renzi to discuss Rome 2024 bid

ROME (AP) — Italian Olympic Committee president Giovanni Malago has met with Italian Premier Matteo Renzi to discuss a potential Rome bid for the 2024 Summer Games.

The meeting Tuesday took place at the premier’s office.

CONI would only say the pair discussed a long list of national and international sports items. But CONI also said that Renzi would appear at the Olympic committee’s headquarters for an awards ceremony on Dec. 15 — which could be a perfect opportunity to make an official announcement.

Bids will need to be submitted next year and the host city will be chosen in 2017.

CONI has been hesitant to announce a bid too early after former premier Mario Monti refused to support a 2020 candidacy.

Bids for 2024 are also expected from Germany and the United States.
