200 inmates moved to Augusta Correctional Center

CRAIGSVILLE, Va. (AP) — Augusta Correctional Center’s inmate population has increased in the wake of the closures of other corrections facilities.

Virginia Department of Corrections spokeswoman Lisa Kinney tells The News-Virginian (http://bit.ly/1t7TUsg ) that 200 inmates have been moved to the prison in Craigsville from other facilities.

Kinney says the department anticipates employees affected by the closures would be moved to the Augusta Correctional Center. But she doesn’t know how many employees would be moved.

Earlier this month, Gov. Terry McAuliffe announced the closure of the Cold Springs Work Center, the White Post Diversion Center and the main portion of the Powhatan Correctional Center. The closures are part of overall cuts aimed at closing a shortfall in the state’s two-year budget.
